Too bare?
I've now illustrated a background for my mermaid and can't decide whether it is nice and simple or too bare. Sometimes when you spend hours staring at the same illustration it is very difficult to tell if it needs more wrk or if you should just stop. I'll post it up here and come back to it in a few days time.

I don't think it's too bare at all, but think the background might be better in just blues. At the moment her hair and the sand being similar colours kind of pick each other out, losing a bit of contrast between her and the background. If you cover up the lower half you can see what I mean. Nice work though, and nice blog.
Thanks Jonathan. I'm going to have another look at her when I've finished the work I'm doing today. Your comments are very helpful- sometimes I just can't work out what's wrong with an illustration until someone else points it out!
Cool. Your characters are nice and lively, maybe a few more fish would be a good way of also getting more colour in. There's all kinds of wierd tropical fish you could have fun with. The interaction might also imply a bit more of a narrative in a picture.
